Highland Cattle Seen in South of England
January 10th 2009 00:00
These wonderful shaggy beasts with the long horns and stylish bangs ("fringe" in England) have a long history. According to the website for the Kinlochroag Fold of Pedigree Highland Cattle, this is "the oldest pedigree breed of cattle in the world and the first breed to be registered. The Highland Cattle Society's first herd book dates from 1884. "
The most lasting memory I have of seeing Highland Cattle comes from Scotland, where we rounded a corner en route to Ballater (near Aberdeen), and there they were.
This photo from Flickr.com user treehouse1977 was taken quite a bit further south, at St. Cross. That's shown on the map treehouse1977 provided, as being just a little (10 km, or 7 miles, approximately) north of Southampton, on the M3.
